As shelter-in-place orders extend into the horizon, we want to prioritize the people who are struggling the most.  We’ve taught in many lovely nature programs over the years, and we have noticed that even in “the best of times” they tend to cater to wealthier, whiter families.  Of course wealthy white folks deserve good programs too; here in the Bay we are blessed with a robust network of programs that serve those families.  We heartily welcome folks of those demographics to consider EBSS amongst their choices, but it is not who we have centered in our design process.  Rather, we want to fill gaps in the existing network, and create unique opportunities for mutual aid across historic barriers of class and race.

Demand has far exceeded our expectations. We are so very grateful! We put a lot of care into balancing each pod according to our diversity goals, and we are committed to growing intentionally.  Right now the main limiting factor is funding; as we pull in more funds, we will be able to add more pods.

We have not run a program quite like this before, and ask for folks’ patience and participation in helping us learn how to do it compassionately and sustainably.
