We are a grassroots collective of educators who recognize that we are all in this world together. Our teaching team believes that we become stronger when we support each-other. We’ve taught in many lovely nature programs over the years, but have noticed that they tend to center more wealthy, white families. We want our project to fill in the gaps in that network, and create unique opportunities for mutual support across historic barriers of class and race.

It is very important for us to re-embody community. To us, solidarity means “sharing the burden of struggle.” We work to minimize systemic injustice by prioritizing the needs of families most impacted.

We know that commitment to doing the work is a safe and effective place to begin this transformation. As part of our efforts to create a more inclusive and diverse reality, we work to offer access to all families, without exception. EBSS invites you to support and share your resources with a sliding scale model to build on this community effort.

We hope families approach the program and their donations from the perspective of mutual aid: sharing their privilege without expectations, with trust in reciprocity. We have not run a program quite like this before, and ask for peoples’ patience and participation in helping us learn how to do this compassionately and sustainably.

That said, here are our recommended donations based on combined family income:

Yearly Family Income        $X / child / hr
$0 - $20K                            $0-$3
$20K - $40K                       $1-$4
$40K - $60K                       $3-$6
$60K - $80K                       $5-$8
$80K - $110K                      $8-$12
$110K - $150K                     $11-$17
$150K - $190K                    $16-$24
$190K - $250K                   $23-$31
$250K+                                $30+

Please adjust your pledge based on your life circumstances and your access to other forms of wealth. You can ask yourself questions like:

Do you rent or own your home? Do you own any other properties? Are you housed at all?

Do you have access to generational wealth, inheritance, white privilege, etc?

Are you caring for someone who’s elderly or disabled?

Do you often buy expensive vacations or gadgets?

If you have multiple children, do they each have a room, or do they have to share?

Are you still paying off debts, such as loans?

Is your household a two-parent household? If so, is one parent able to stay home to care for the children?

When families choose to pay more, they create unique opportunities for their own children, and create a bond of solidarity with families that are struggling with unemployment and housing insecurity. A deeply accessible program means our students get to share their formative years with people they otherwise might not meet, people with an incredible diversity of life experiences and perspectives.
